Breaking News: United States Department of Justice Files to
Block AT&T Purchase of T-Mobile
DOJ States the proposed $39 billion transaction would
substantially lessen competition for mobile wireless telecommunications
services across the United States, resulting in higher prices, poorer
quality services, fewer choices and fewer innovative products
Earlier this
morning, the United States Department of Justice announced that it would be
filing a lawsuit to stop the planned AT&T purchase of T-Mobile USA.
The Department's
press release, which can be found here stated DOJ believed the merger
was anti-competitive and would do harm to American consumers.
The announcement
follows the submission of new economic models from AT&T to the Federal
Communications Commission in an attempt to bolster the giant company's
claims that the merger would improve wireless services.
The California
Public Utilities Commission also independently launched a wide-ranging inquiry
on the impact of the planned merger on residents of the state.
