LA Clearchannel Hosts Suspended After Advertiser Boycott | ||
Update 3/22/12 Los Angeles City Council passes a resolution denouncing hate speech and calling for more diversity on Los Angeles broadcast stations, and commends council member Jan Perry for penning the motion. The resolution passed with overwhelming support by a 13-2 margin. Update 3/12/2012 For two weeks KTLA News' daily segment, " Update: 2/16/2012 KFI-AM suspended the hosts of the "John and Ken Show" for calling the recently-deceased entertainer Whitney Houston a "crack ho" on their AM shock jock broadcast. Update: 11/7/2011 The list of advertisers who have pulled ads from the John and Ken Show has increased. The list includes Albertsons, AT&T Wireless, The Aquarium of the Pacific, General Motors, Home Depot, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Ralph's, Verizon Fios and Von's Grocery Stores. of "The John and Ken Show" on Clearchannel radio station, KFI, have terrorized
Los Angeles’ Latino, Asian American and African American communities,
creating an atmosphere of hate and intolerance and legitimizing violence
and discrimination. On September 1st, 2011, they began one of their usual rants about undocumented immigrants and the California DREAM Act. While John and Ken have a history of demonizing Latinos, their September 1st rant went too far. They took it upon themselves to target one immigrant rights activist in particular, Jorge-Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). The duo provided Mr. Cabrera’s office and personal cell phone numbers and encouraged their listeners to call and harass him. Mr. Cabrera proceeded to receive over 430 abusive and threatening calls. Many of the callers repeated John and Ken’s exact words, and then wished death upon Mr. Cabrera and/or threatened his life and his physical safety. The National Hispanic Media Coalition and a number of partners have decided that enough is enough and they are launching a campaign to remove John & Ken from the radio and TV, Letter from LA immigrant rights groups below.
