Protest Removal of Women's Magazine - Cancelled
Thursday, May 21st 2009 5:00pm
Berkeley, CA
The Women's Magazine is a weekly hour-long radio show produced by a diverse collective for community radio station KPFA. It focuses on coverage of local women's struggles and connecting them to global women's rights issues. After a 3-month sabbatical for KPFA to air a look at the Obama Administrations' first 100 days, the scheduled return to the air was abruptly canceled less than 10 minutes to airtime with guests waiting in studio.
The show remains off the air with no scheduled date of return. This is shabby treatment at best, and a big loss to local women's media. Come insist on women's programming, produced by for and about women and demand fairness and evenhandedness in programming at this left institution, the nation's first community radio station.
Update from Kate Raphael:
Great news! Thanks to all your support, pledges, emails, phone calls, etc., KPFA management has decided we are NOT preempted while we are being evaluated. We are scheduled to go back on air on June 1. In light of this victory, we have decided not to have the planned demonstration at KPFA this Thursday, so hopefully you can all start your holiday weekend a little early!
BUT, we know this is only a temporary reprieve. We may still be permanently replaced, the Program Council has not been restored, and there is no commitment by management to diversity and democracy.
Watch this space for notifications about how to support us as we go back on air. But right now, please email ipd@kpfa.org, gm@kpfa.org and let them know how happy you are that Women's Magazine will be heard again. And don't forget to listen June 1, live at 1:00 p.m. or ANY TIME on the web!
