Did you know that despite composing half of the population, only 23% of commercial films in the United States are produced by women? Only 7% are directed by women, and only 8% are written by women. The 3rd annual WAM!Boston (Women, Action, and the Media) Film Festival looks to challenge this status quo by showcasing the latest films by up-and-coming female filmmakers.
We’re seeking both short and feature-length films in all genres for a film festival with a purpose: creating new audiences and new opportunities for films made by and about women. All subjects are welcome – drama, comedy, documentary, experimental – the sky’s the limit! We only ask that your submission meets the following criteria:
1) Film must be directed and/or produced by a female-identifying or genderqueer filmmaker.
2) The story/topic of the film should feature women and/or genderqueer people.
3) The film was released in 2010 or later (in order to highlight current works), with preference given to films that are released in 2012 or to be released in 2013.
In order to create dialogue, we will also give extra points to filmmakers who can attend the screening (or send someone integral to the film) to discuss their film. Please note, WAM! cannot reimburse travel expenses.
Finally, WAM! believes in the importance of supporting women’s creative work. While we cannot pay filmmakers outright to screen their films, we have instituted a profit-sharing model. Whatever proceeds remain after festival expenses have been paid will be distributed amongst the filmmakers. We’re also introducing an Audience Award this year, to reward the best-loved film at the festival, as determined by audience voting.
Apply today! If your film is available for online review, use the online form below. If you’d like to submit via DVD, click here to download and print our application form.
