This programme in cultural journalism brings reporters from different parts of world to participate in a workshop to explore and recount the stories of Caribbean culture. It is offered from January 7 - 27, 2013, by the New Journalism Foundation (FNPI) and the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, in collaboration with the Secretary of Culture of Barranquilla, the Cartago Foundation, the Hay Festival, and the Cartagena International Music Festival, and with the support of the Organization Ardila Lülle (OAL) and the University Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Caribbean campus. The aim of this workshop in Cartagena, Colombia, will be to use the themes of music, literature, and popular culture to strengthen the basic forms of cultural journalism, specifically the interview, extended reportage, and critical commentary. It will also give an opportunity to think about the role of cultural journalism in an era in which creator and audience have an increasingly direct contact, facilitated by digital tools. The Gabriel García Márquez fellowship in Cultural Journalism is divided into three modules, coordinated by FNPI teacher Héctor Feliciano and the American journalist Jonathan Levi. In addition, each module will include both national and international guest lecturers. A total of 20 journalists will be selected and split in two groups of 10. The first group will work on the music module, the second group will work on the literature module, and both groups will work together on the popular culture module. Modules 1) Music: from January 7-13, 2013 during The Cartagena International Music Festival, with the guidance of Anne Midgette, music journalist and blogger of the Washington Post newspaper, and Diego Fischerman, journalist, music critic and blogger from the newspaper Página/12 Argentina. 2) Popular Culture: from January 14-20 2013, within the framework of Pre-Carnival of Barranquilla, together with writer and FNPI teacher, Alberto Salcedo Ramos. 3) Literature: from January 21-27, 2013, during the Hay Festival Cartagena with the help of Francine Prose, writer and ex-president of the PEN American Center, and Mario Jursich, director of the Colombian magazine El Malpensante. All costs for tuition, air travel, and lodging will be covered by the Fellowship.
