The townhall aims to raise awareness about Realignment, and build a base in Alameda County to fight for the human rights of people in cages, as well as for formerly-incarcerated people .
For those of us not familiar with this new law better known as "realignment", it shifts responsibility for many incarcerated people from the state to the counties, thus posing significant challenges to the health of all communities impacted by the criminal justice system in California. This October marked the one-year anniversary of its implementation. In the past year, our 58 counties have implemented the law in different ways, often leading to the increased presence of incarcerated people at the county level. Many questions still remain unanswered.
How has Realignment impacted those who have been sentenced under its terms? What does it really mean to have your loved one detained at a local jail for up to 2, 5, or even 10+ years?
Come hear from people who have been impacted by Realignment, including testimonies from people inside county jails, and help us understand and expose the human costs of incarcerating people in local jail s, and how it affects the well-being of all communiti es in California.
