The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is the nonprofit that many Americans have never heard of, but whose prolific model legislation shapes many of our states’ social and economic policies, from “Stand Your Ground” gun laws to voter ID laws. Panelists will discuss advocacy against ALEC-inspired legislation in California, and their organizations’ efforts to publicize how often ALEC is behind regressive laws in California and around the country. You will also see a portion of the Common Cause film “United States of ALEC” (narrated by Bill Moyers).
