The descendants of Genghis Khan adopted a market economy in the 1990s, and since then they have faced rapid social and cultural change. The Mongolian Dream gives an intimate view into how these changes impact the lives of five individuals – a nomadic herder, a school teacher who has to hustle dinosaur eggs on the side to make ends meet, a Buddhist healer, an ambitious student eager to embrace new ways, and an aspiring pop star with a specialty in traditional Mongolian instruments. Starting in 1999 and spanning over a decade, this is a story about the personal experience of cultural identity – the losses as well as the gains – when an ancient culture moves into modernity.
