This renowned program offers 20 journalists the opportunity to spend 10 months experimenting, testing and developing innovative ideas for the future of journalism. Journalists from around the world are welcome to apply. According to Dawn Garcia, managing director of the program, they're seeking: "People who make things happen. Journalists and journalism entrepreneurs who are curious and optimistic about the opportunities presented by the dramatic changes in journalism. …Journalists and journalism entrepreneurs who have a track record of accomplishment and are ambitious to do more. People who will make great use of a year at Stanford, in Silicon Valley, and will keep innovating." Each class of Knight Fellows works together and independently on solving problems such as how to leverage technology in the service of journalism, finding new ways to reach underserved communities, experimenting with new funding mechanisms for quality journalism, and fostering independent journalism in countries lacking a history of a free press. This could include innovative projects focused on advancing community news and engagement.
