The rise of new technology and a vastly expanded market, coupled with government cut-backs and the decline of local community, have given rise to what Arlie Hochschild calls "emotional capitalism." The most intimate aspects of our lives have become increasingly commercialized. Today, we can purchase services that will provide us with anything from love coaches and professional potty trainers to surrogacy and sperm and eggs, plus a vast array of services for old age.
But at what cost? The financial burden, coming at a time of economic crisis, is tearing families apart. And the emotional fallout from outsourcing family and personal services goes unaddressed. With stress levels likely to rise, where do we go from here?
