This competition is open to all middle and high school students. Your goal is to tell a great story. Focus on one person and tell how his or her story relates to a bigger global issue. Your reporting must be original, factual and true, and it should consider multiple sides of the story. It should feature at least three voices: an in-person interview with the individual affected, an expert on the topic (like a researcher, a teacher, a doctor, or a professor), and any other third voice of your choice. That third person can be you, the narrator.

Author Belva Davis, is a foundational player in Bay Area journalism with a career spanning more than five decades. Since becoming the first black female television journalist in the West in 1964, she has covered events of local, national, and international scope; interviewed US Presidents and other world leaders; and, for the past 19 years, served as the host of KQED's "This Week in Northern California".

Founding the public school, a vital history detailed by W.E.B. Du Bois in Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880, is reviewed and discussed at the monthly meeting of Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party.

It comes back on TV in the form of a confession from a cannibal; it enters the Vietnamese restaurant as a Vietnam Vet with a shameful secret; it articulates itself in the peculiar tics of a man with Tourette's Syndromewho struggles to deal with a profound tragedy. *Birds of Paradise Lost* is an emotional tour de force, intricately rendering the false starts and revelations in the struggle for integration, and in so doing, the human heart.

Disturbing, powerful and emotionally devastating, Tears of Gaza is less a conventional documentary than a shocking record: of the 2008-2009 3-week bombing of Gaza by the Israeli military (backed by the U.S., using US-made weapons). Photographed by several Palestinian cameramen both during and after the offensive, this powerful film by Norwegian director Vibeke Løkkeberg focuses on the impact of the attacks on the civilian population. Similar events certainly occurred in Dresden, Tokyo, Baghdad and Sarajevo, but of course Gaza isn’t those places. Tears of Gaza demands that we examine the costs of war on a civilian populace. PUNK IN AFRICA traces this until-now untold story from its roots in the underground rock music of early 1970s Johannesburg, the first multi-racial punk bands formed in the wake of the Soweto Uprising and the militant anti-apartheid hardcore and post-punk bands of the 1980s to the rise of celebratory African-inspired ska bands which sprang up from Cape Town to Maputo in the democratic era of the 1990s. Today, an emerging generation of bands continue to draw on this legacy to confront the political challenges of contemporary Zimbabwe and the uncertain identity issues of the Afrikaans minority in South Africa as the scene also begins to spread across the rest of the African continent. Four Oakland activists recently attended a conference and meetings as well as museums and historic locations in Havana, then took a road trip to the above listed cities during a two week trip during late January and early February. Highlights included the Jose Marti, Revolution, early Havana, Archaeology, Bay of Pigs, and Che museums; a meeting with the legendary labor leader Pedro Ross, the World Balance Conference, and visits to Trinidad and Old Havana.

In an area with such a wealth of young talent, it is essential to cultivate the next generation of community leaders to reflect the diversity of our region. In our Multicultural Fellowship Program, we select young professionals of color with the promise and passion to create significant social change. By working in our grantmaking teams and contributing to numerous projects across the Foundation, fellows gain dynamic hands-on leadership experience. Former fellows now serve as executive directors and development directors in nonprofits, as program officers in foundations, as government officials, and as professionals and academics who serve or work with nonprofits.

an a murderer be redeemed? What happens to murderers who’ve served decades in prison? Award-winning journalist Nancy Mullane began asking these questions while visiting San Quentin State Prison on an assignment to report on the exploding costs of incarceration. The people she met in prison astonished her with their remorse, introspection, determination and hopes for freedom and forgiveness. The five men profiled in this book all committed tragic crimes that tore families and communities apart. But given a life sentence and the possibility of parole, society offered each man a kind of promise, that if he paid his debt to society and demonstrated rehabilitation, he might have a chance to return to a life outside the prison walls. Each man embraced that hope and spent decades in San Quentin working towards the possibility of a second chance. State prison statistics, provided exclusively to Mullane, show that convicted murderers released from prison on parole never commit murder again, and less than 1% commit another crime.

Nearly three years after the official end of the Great Recession, the world capitalist economy is mired in seemingly endless crisis. Recession, debt defaults, and record unemployment plague the capitalist world, accompanied by austerity, massive cuts in social programs, skyrocketing poverty, increasing homelessness -- and at the very same time -- record corporate profits. One bottom line indicator of how bad things are: there are now fifty million "food insecure" people in the US alone (up from thirty six million in 2007), seventeen million of which are children. Despite the “happy talk” coming out of Washington, the US (and world) is in the midst of a profound, long-term social, political, and economic crisis, not seen since the days of the Great Depression.

 What is going on? What's causing the ongoing crisis? What and where is it leading to?

With the increasing popularity of social network sites (SNS) users of all levels are sharing an unprecedented amount of personal information on the Internet. Most SNSs give users the ability to specify what they share with whom, but the difficulty of the task raises the question of whether users' privacy settings match their sharing intentions. Maritza Johnson presents the results of a study that measures sharing intentions to identify potential violations in users' real Facebook privacy settings. Her results indicate a mismatch between intentions and reality: every one of the 65 participants in the study had at least one confirmed sharing violation. In other words, SNS users' are unable to correctly manage their privacy settings. Her team also found that a majority of users cannot or will not fix such errors.

From Gibraltar to Bamako. If you were to were to walk all the way, what sort of encounters would be in store for you? Would the routes of different migrations cross? Would the path between thousands of people going in the opposite direction have its meaning revealed? this is the quest undertaken by the director, who brings us along on a journey through the Africa she loves, during several months. She is not alone: the trail is blazed by a public reader who is walking with his donkey/library on a pilgrimage to his birthplace. The stories that intertwine on the road all belong to the same history: the encounter with the Other - each one a matter of chance, each one a matter of a small miracle.

For nearly forty years, ALEC has secretively disseminated model laws to a network of more than 2,000 state legislators -- resulting in increased big-business dominance in American public life and a weakened democracy. Now, progressives are coming together to build the state and local political infrastructure necessary to support working families and the middle class, promote sustainability, and revitalize democracy. The American Legislative and Issue Campaign Exchange, or ALICE, is a small but vital piece of this infrastructure. ALICE is an online public library of progressive state and local law. It brings together both “exemplary” laws (those introduced or enacted somewhere and worthy of replication) as well as “model” laws (those with suggested general language, ready to be tailored to a particular jurisdiction). There’s also background research, talking points, and other aids for effective communication. ALICE founder Joel Rogers will speak about how ALICE fits into a progressive strategy at the state and local level, and ways that students and faculty can get involved.

For decades much has been written about developing diverse boards in the nonprofit sector but to date there’s been slow progress to not only recruit, but retain board members. In fact, while people of color make up 60% of the state’s population, they represent less than a quarter of all board members in California nonprofits[1] In addition, we continue to hear nonprofit leaders are challenged with recruiting, developing and retaining effective board members. We believe that meaningful diversity and representation on boards will raise the level of leadership and provide valuable perspectives to further the goals of our community organizations. About the Academy The goal of the Board Leadership Academy is to both recruit and train the next generation of diverse leaders to serve on the boards of the East Bay community.

This three-session workshop will focus on helping you learn the basics of Final Cut Pro X! You will become familiar with the new Final Cut Pro X interface. The workshop will guide you through the entire editing process- from importing media files to exporting a complete piece. We will cover the use of editing tools, effects, titles, and transitions as well as FCP X’s new organizational system. This class or certification in FCP 7 is required to use our editing lab. Knowledge of Mac OS X and basic computer navigation is strongly suggested. For those not familiar with the Mac Operating system there is a Mac Basics workshop offered an hour before the first session.

Based at USC's Annenberg School of Journalism, The National Health Journalism Fellowship and the Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism are open to print, broadcast, and online journalists from around the country. National Fellows receive meals, travel, and lodging plus a $2,000 stipend upon publication or broadcast of a major fellowship project on a domestic health issue. Dennis Hunt Fund grantees attend the National Fellowship seminars and receive reporting grants of $2,500 to $10,000 (instead of the $2,000 stipend) upon publication or broadcast of a substantive project on a community health issues.

In 2012, Emory Douglas, former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, went to Chiapas to work with Zapatista artists to make art, share visions, bringing together the revolutionary art traditions of two communities. On April 10, artists Emory Douglas and Rigo 23 will present art and photography from the Zapantera Negra art project and share their experiences with the Panthers and the Zapatistas.

The Waiting Room is a character-driven documentary film that uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. Oakland Digital continues it's billboard competition in search of an iconic design that represents what about Oakland (or Berkeley) inspires you. Oakland Digital believes in the power of graphic designers to educate, inform and inspire the community through the medium of outdoor marketing.

This exhibit privileges formal achievement in visual art, showcasing expertise and training in visual fields; but it also asks “if gender is a kind of doing, an incessant activity performed in part, without one’s knowing and without one’s willing?” (Butler 2004, 35). Engaging Judith Butler’s question, the exhibit analyzes constructions of the female gender by including several compositions of the female form. From painting and drawing, to video and performance art, the works move viewers beyond formal values of art, and toward an understanding of the racial, patriarchal, and classed constructions of gender. Furthermore, If gender is a kind of doing is an annual show for the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, and, historically, a Latina-only show. This fact complicates the bodies that are on display because many of them represent the female form outside racial definitions of the “Latina,” challenging notions of what is exotic and what is “normal.”

The San Francisco Foundation invites accomplished film/video/digital media artists to apply to the Bay Area Documentary Fund for early production support. Last year, the Bay Area Documentary Fund granted $125,000 to seven documentary movies. This year, grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 will be given to support documentary projects in early production phases by experienced filmmakers with an esteemed body of previously created work.

Through a two-year $50,000 Peace First Fellowship we will invest in their leadership as peacemakers and share their stories with the nation.

A little over a year ago, Larry Shoup signed a contract with Monthly Review Press to produce a new book on the premier capitalist ruling class organization in the U.S. and the world, the CFR. Although the book is not yet completed, after a year of research and writing, Larry feels that it is time to begin report backs on his findings and conclusions so far. The talk will begin with a portrait of the CFR, its capitalist class basis, recent organizational history, and national and international networks. The Council’s neoliberal and imperialist geopolitical and geoeconomic worldview will then be covered, including a case study of its central role in the war on and occupation of Iraq.

Eileen Murphy is one of San Francisco's first female KJs. She got her start at Annie's Cocktail Lounge in 2001 taking over from such musical heavyweights as Spike Slawson (Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Swinging Utters) and KUSF's Terrorbull Ted. In its signature 8-week summer program, Girls Who Code embeds 20 high school girls inside a technology company or university setting from 9 to 5 each day. One out of every 5 active duty female soldiers are sexually assaulted or raped, and many suspect that figure to be under reported. And nearly 20,000 men are victimized every year. Join NLC-SF, Good Ol Girs, Rally.org as we host a screening of The Invisible War, the Oscar nominated documentary about sexual assault in the U.S. military. The film is available courtesy of Spark, which helped secure funding for the film. After the film we'll have a short Q&A and discussion on what is happening in Congress, and what the rest of us can do to support our folks in uniform.

These are strange days for writers. The publishing landscape is being radically transformed. Publishers have merged, cut back, or closed their doors, leaving editors out of work, cancelling books slated for publication, and making it harder for writers to make a living. New technology has delivered its own blow with the e-book and Amazon’s aggressive marketing, spurring ongoing legal battle of publishing titans in the US and Europe. What does this mean for writers and readers? On April 17th, Santa Clara’s Creative Writing Program will host a panel on “The Future of Publishing,” for all of us who read, write, and love books. Local authors, literary agents, the owner of Book Shop Santa Cruz, and the Santa Cruz/Monterey Chapter Chair of the National Writer’s Union will share insights and strategies to help us understand and navigate this brave new world of publishing.
