City Council Affirms Workers' Rights, Comcast Backs Out

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Comcast Corp. won't sign a long-term agreement with the city for cable service after leaders approved an ordinance requiring companies with city franchises to allow employees to vote on unionizing.
The deal included $17.4 million to build a network connecting 254 city and school buildings and expanded channels and public access stations.
Union officials praised the deal, but Comcast spokesman Andrew Johnson said the company is reviewing whether the city exceeded its authority by adopting the labor rights ordinance.
Johnson said the company would like to restart negotiations in the near future.
